An unexpected arrival at Kandy in Sri Lanka was this engineering train from Nanu Oya which was in the charge of Class M5c number 779 which failed en route and was rescued by sister M5c number 767. These locomotives were built by Hitachi in Japan during 1979.
Kandy is in the middle of a major rebuild. A new line is being laid to Peradiniya 6k away. This will involve a new signal box and some of the semaphores being removed. Behind me and to the right the station yards are being stripped out with a new parcels depot being built.
I am assured that the existing signal cabin will remain primarilarly for services on the Matale line. The gantry is safe but a new road is going in requiring the demolition of many of the railway workers quarters. There is talk of an air bridge. I cant say for sure but i am worried the road bridge will cross the railway behind the gantry.
There is also a tram system being built around Kandy. Kandy is a gem of a city in Asia. The history , culture and amazing buildings will be lost. The amazing prison building built by the British in the heart of Kandy is to be demolished and the land given to the Chinese.
The Sri Lankan government have sold out to the Chinese in exchange for a permanent port in Colombo.
