Tropical Yum | Restaurant Review

Brunch and booze… what more could you ask for?

Tropical Yum truly embodies their name, with flavours amalgamating both Western and local cuisine. Their masterful incorporation of local ingredients in traditional Western breakfast foods is unmatched. Not to mention that they’re home to several unique and creatively named cocktails that are sure to keep you wanting more!

Now, on to the food!

Mains

Benny the Eggzelent LKR 1,850 (5/5)

Tropical Yum’s twist on a classic Eggs Benedict consisted of eggs, pork bacon, spinach, mushrooms, Lankan-style roast bread and a creamy hollandaise sauce. The egg was perfectly poached with a set white and creamy golden centre. The sautéed spinach added a nice earthy tone to the otherwise vibrant and heavy dish complimenting the subtle mushrooms perfectly. The thick yet pillowy roast bread worked as a scrumptious core as it got saturated with all the good juices of the many components of the meal. It’s a feast for both your stomach and your eyes!

The Chick Fill LKR 1,500 (4.5/5)

Chicken and waffles are now a quintessential brunch item after gaining immense popularity over the last few years. Tropical Yum throws their twist on this staple by brilliantly incorporating kochchi into their waffle syrup. The waffle had a nice buttery flavour that wasn’t too sweet, so it didn’t offset the spices from the chicken thigh, but we wish the waffles were slightly thicker and less dense. The chicken, however, was the star of the show; fried until crispy and coated in a thin layer of exquisitely peppered breadcrumbs, it was completed by a drizzle of their kochchi kithul treacle. The treacle itself was excellent, but the subtle kochchi undertone and the aftertaste were something that elevated it; as a spice fan myself, had it been a little spicier, it would’ve been a 10/10!

Dessert

Peanut Butter and Jelly French Twist TBD (3.5/5)

Is a brunch spot even a brunch spot if it doesn’t serve French toast? It’s always been a favourite of mine growing up! This was an elevated version of Tropical Yum’s exciting “French Twist” (LKR 1,000). The base is the same; French toast sticks with kithul treacle, bees honey and kochchi kithul treacle made into small peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. The French toast was moist and sweet. PB&J is an already heavenly combination, but replacing the bread with French toast is genius! Had the peanut butter been crunchy instead of smooth, it would have provided some much-needed texture. We also found that the orange zest was unnecessary as the dish’s flavour alone was phenomenal, and the bitterness of the ring was slightly off-putting. Overall we liked it and recommended you bring a friend to share! While the original French Twist is on the menu, the PB&J version will be added to their menu soon!

Drinks

Nildiya Pokuna LKR 1,800 (4/5)

For those who are yet to hear of Nildiya Pokuna, it’s a natural cave pond with water that can only be described as a shade of electric blue. This drink is its spitting image. This cocktail was similar to a pinã colada with a base that consisted of white rum, pineapple juice and coconut cream, but that’s where the similarities end, as this cocktail featured narickela (coconut liquor) and blue Curaçao syrup. We enjoyed this one thoroughly, and it was gone in a flash!

Jack and Jill TBD (5/5)

This drink was our absolute fave! We were unsure of the combination of jackfruit and alcohol, but it was delicious! The jackfruit flavour didn’t overpower the alcohol, yet you could barely even taste the vodka making it a dangerous combination for a cocktail. Sweetened with simple syrup and infused with soda, this cocktail was something that we couldn’t stop talking about. This drink is yet to be added to the menu, but it will be soon!

Butterfly Effect TBD (3/5)

This drink used butterfly pea extract with simple syrup and Sprite; the butterfly pea extract gave it a gorgeous purple colour. This drink can be made as a cocktail or mocktail. We had the mocktail version and it was super yummy, however, It’s yet to be added to the menu, but it will be added soon!

Ambience

The vibe was tropical and fun; the staff were incredibly accommodating and friendly. Tropical Yum is mainly a brunch and breakfast type of spot with a plethora of cocktails. It’s the perfect place to be on the weekend with friends. As it’s family-friendly and even better, pet-friendly, it really is an experience for the whole family!

Tropical Yum hosts ladies nights where ladies get free cocktails at the end of every month and there’s plenty of space to dance around under their giant disco lights. Some of the menu items mentioned in the review are yet to be added to the menu but will be added soon – but worry not, because they can be made upon request! In fact, the items might even be on the menu as early as mid-September so by the time you read this, you should definitely head over and try them out!
