The Galle Of It.

The Galle Of It.

A lower quadrant semaphore signal still working hard in the south of Sri Lanka near Galle. This signal is a left over from the Victorian era when Sri Lanka was part of the British Empire.
The line from Colombo to Galle is now all electric light signals but the line from Galle further south to Matara still has a few crossings guarded by semaphores.. Even though this signal is on the final approach to Galle on the Colombo line it is the exception not the norm.
The locomotive is an extremely handsome M5c built in Japan by Hitachi in 1979. There are 16 of these beauties operating in Sri Lanka, this one number 779 was re-engined with a 1150hp Caterpillar 3516 in 1997. She is seen working the 0835 Colombo Fort to Matara. On arrival at the terminus of Galle she will run round her train and take the junction south along the coast for the last 30 miles of her journey.
