Preping The Paint Shop.

This is a Class M5b in the paint shop within the Rathmalana Locomotive workshops in Sri Lanka. 16 M5 class locomotives were built by Hitachi in 1979 and all are still operational. The M5b variant is fitted with a Paxman Valenta engine as originally fitted to HSTs.
The door to the paint shop is being repaired before 777 has a little more bodywork preparation carried out. 777 will be painted by hand the paint being applied by brush. All locos are painted this way, on close inspection you can frequently see paint runs and brush strokes not to mention the occasional bug that became stuck on the drying paintwork.
This adds to the locomotives character. They are regularly washed, washing takes place in April and June this is during the rainy season where mother nature gives them a thorough wash down.
