Independence Memorial Hall, Colombo, Sri Lanka (2018)

Independence Memorial Hall is located in Independence Square in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule with the restoration of full governing responsibility to a Ceylonese-elected legislature on 4 February 1948. The hall was built at the location where the opening ceremony of the first parliament was held under the auspices of late Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester.

The Memorial Hall is an open sided hall with beautifully carved cement columns and a shapely tiled roof. The column and pillars are decorated with traditional Sri Lankan designs. Every square inch is filled with lavish symbols of the island’s rich history and political freedom. Statues of lions are placed around the building. In front of the memorial hall is a statue of the founding Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, Don Stephen Senanayake. In its basement is the Independence Memorial Museum which displays stone busts of the people who fought valiantly for the country’s independence.

The Memorial Hall and the surrounding park are the venue for religious events and annual national day celebrations.
