Fallen Sun

Fallen Sun

A pale ‘kolam’ design marks the street outside a small home in Thalakotuwa Gardens, Colombo. ‘Kolam’ are commonly stylistic representations of ‘Surya’, the sun god, and during the mid-January harvest festival of Thai Pongal, Tamil households in South India and Sri Lanka often sport colourful versions of these designs. But throughout the rest of the year, everyday ‘kolam’ are drawn outside homes in the hope of attracting good fortune, fading away with the rain and passing feet, but redrawn with the stubborn determination of a desperate faith. Sri Lanka, January 2024.
