We have all heard different statistics and data that prove that wearing a face mask can significantly protect you and those around you from contracting the Coronavirus. However, did you stop to think that what type of mask you wear and how you wear it are equally important when protecting yourself from the virus?
Ever since the pandemic came into our lives eighteen months ago, we’ve all been wearing different types of masks without really knowing what kind of mask can better protect us from the virus.
With so much misinformation still circulating, we thought it would be beneficial to discuss the features to look for when wearing a face mask. Let’s jump right in!
How do you choose which mask to buy?
According to guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization, checking for filtration, breathability and fit is essential when purchasing a mask. There may be different types of masks; you could see which mask thoroughly covers your nose, cheeks and chin.
Make sure that the mask fits snuggly against your face and doesn’t move around when speaking, as it would allow air to penetrate through the edges of the mask rather than being filtered through the fabric.
Fabric masks should be made with three layers of defence:
- Inner layer with a skin-friendly, non-woven fabric.
- Middle layer with a melt-blown, high-density filter.
- Outer layer with a non-woven fabric such as polypropylene.
Purchasing masks with vents or exhalation valves is not advised because they allow the unfiltered breath to escape the mask, allowing transmission of the virus to people around you if you have already contracted it.
Blueflex is a trusted manufacturer of premium quality face masks. Tested and Certified by Bureau Veritas and the National Medicines Regulatory Authority, Blueflex provides highly efficient surgical masks and N95 masks.
Adhering to health guidelines as per the World Health Organization, Blueflex masks are made with a three-layer, leak-proof, non-woven fabric. Blueflex masks also have a high-density filter for greater breathability with state-of-the-art bacterial filtration technology, guaranteeing extra protection that we all require.
These masks are soft, comfortable and prevent irritations of your skin, making it easier for you to have your mask on for longer hours.
What are the general tips to follow when using and maintaining your mask?
- Clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitiser or soap and water before touching your mask.
- Inspect the mask for tears or holes before putting it on. Avoid using a mask that is damaged.
- Adjust the mask to cover your mouth, nose and chin, leaving no gaps on the sides.
- Secure your mask at the bridge of your nose so that it’s tight and fitted to your face.
- Place the straps behind your ears. Avoid crossing the straps because this can cause gaps on the side of your face, affecting the filtration of the air you inhale.
- Avoid touching the mask while wearing it. If you touch it, clean your hands.
- Change your mask if it gets dirty or wet.
- Maintain your masks in a hygienic manner.
With the new mutations that are emerging, it would also be beneficial to wear double masks to maximise protection from this virus. Let this article be a reminder to wear your mask correctly, engage in hygienic practices when maintaining your mask and stay safe!
