The digital competition in partnership with WNPS was initiated to teach children about the importance of upcycling—to recycle in such a way that the resulting product is of a higher value than the original item. Seylan Tikiri, the pioneer children’s savings account in the country, stepped forward for this project with the hopes of educating children on the importance of nature conservation during a time such as this.
Six winners from two age categories were selected from over 200 submissions. The winners were chosen based on their unique upcycled items’ creative design, utility, and innovation. The lucky winners received exciting gifts ranging from school bags, basketball shooters, blocky toy packs, stationery packs, Tikiri Digi watches, and cash prizes from Seylan Tikiri credited to a newly opened account.
The winners from the Ages 5-8 Category included: Senethi Dimansa (First), Evmi Senalya Kariyapperuma (Second), and M. Umar Akmal (Third). The winners from the Ages 9-12 Category included: Rasheli Dewmi (First), Kimberly Wijesuriya, (Second), and M.I.M. Bilal (Third).
Seylan Bank is always on the lookout for innovative ways to educate, engage and encourage children on multiple aspects, through digital platforms. Throughout the lockdown period, Seylan Tikiri played an important part in keeping children’s spirits high with a range of online activities such as Tikiri lockdown diary, Tikiri Digital Avurudu, Vesak Pathuma, Tikiri Champ, Story Telling and many more. These activities were able to keep the children engaged and occupied while being indoors.
The “Up-cycled Waste Items” competition received over 200 entries from young participants displaying great enthusiasm and passion. The competition was held virtually to maintain safe social distancing while continuing its efforts to create awareness on sustainability and encourage young Sri Lankans to convert waste into value. Apart from inculcating the habit of saving amongst children, Seylan Tikiri also focuses on moulding the future generations of Sri Lanka to be responsible, educated citizens.
