HNBF launches island-wide tree-planting initiative for World Environment Day

Leading integrated financial services provider HNB FINANCE proudly announced an all-island tree-planting campaign as a significant sustainability initiative. This noble endeavor, driven by HNB FINANCE’s commitment to environmental preservation and corporate social responsibility, aims to reduce the carbon footprint of Sri Lanka and create lasting benefits for future generations.

The initiative also coincides with the Financial Houses Association’s (FHA) 65th anniversary, which aims to unite FHA member companies in a concerted effort to reduce the national carbon footprint and promote sustainable development in Sri Lanka. Scheduled to take place on World Environment Day, the 5th of June, this campaign sets an ambitious target of planting 200,000 trees.

Commenting on the initiative, HNB FINANCE Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer Chaminda Prabhath noted: “We are proud to embark on this significant sustainability initiative as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship and corporate social responsibility. By planting trees across Sri Lanka, we aim to reduce the carbon footprint of our nation and create a greener, more sustainable future for generations to come. Through collective action and the support of our valued stakeholders, we believe that small steps can make a big difference in addressing climate change and promoting biodiversity. HNB FINANCE is proud to lead by example and inspire others to join us on this transformative journey towards a more eco-friendly Sri Lanka.”

With unwavering dedication, HNB FINANCE will contribute to this cause by planting 9,500 trees, strategically chosen from a variety of species such as Mee, Kumbuk, Naa, Karanda, Kohomba, Ahala, Jack, Seedling Mango, Tamarind, Cashew, Avocado, Maadan, Teak, Halmilla, Palu, Maara, and Nadun. These species have been carefully selected to enhance biodiversity, strengthen ecosystems, and provide a range of ecological benefits. By intercepting runoff water, reducing soil erosion, and improving soil conditions through a natural filtration system, the initiative aims to mitigate the severity of floods and enhance the resilience of ecosystems. It also plays a vital role in minimizing the negative effects of climate change and facilitating the creation of carbon fluxes, thus fostering a sustainable future.

In a resolute effort to ensure the resounding success of their impactful sustainability initiative, HNB FINANCE has partnered with institutions such as schools, religious groups, and the armed forces in the designated areas. Together, they foster a collaborative approach to instill a culture of sustainability and nurture environmental awareness among the children who represent the future leaders of the nation.

Going beyond the act of tree planting, HNB FINANCE is fully committed to the long-term impact of its initiative by following up on the maintenance and growth of the planted trees. This initiative not only benefits the environment but also uplifts the livelihoods of small business entrepreneurs engaged in plant nurseries and related industries, contributing to the economic well-being of local communities.

HNB FINANCE aims to inspire and mobilize other organizations, customers, employees, and the wider community to unite in creating a greener, more sustainable Sri Lanka.
