FITIS International Education Forum 2023 to accelerate the ambitious journey towards a Digital Economy

The International Education Forum, held as part of the INFOTEL 2023 ICT Exhibition, organised by the Education and Training Chapter of the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS), will kick start on Friday 3rd November at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) in Colombo.

To align with the initiative of His Excellency President Ranil Wickremesinghe in expanding the country’s Digital Economy as part of the DIGIECON 2030 initiative, the FITIS Education and Training Chapter aims to increase the technological workforce in Sri Lanka to achieve this vision. The International Education Forum was thus organised to transcend boundaries and stimulate progress in Sri Lanka’s IT educational landscape.

The International Education Forum has encompassed several elements to enrich the event which includes career guidance sessions for students, awareness sessions for parents, panel discussions with international and local academics and experts, evaluation of quality frameworks, identification of emerging trends, and facilitating meaningful dialogue that will shape the future of education. Students, Teachers, Policy Makers, Government Regulatory Body Officials, Representatives from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Higher Education and Ministry of Technology, local government representatives, tech enthusiasts and the industry leaders are invited for the forum.

The Federation of IT Industry Sri Lanka journeys with the Government of Sri Lanka in its “DIGIECON 2030” program, a vision of our Honourable President His Excellency Ranil Wickremesinghe. As a collaborative initiative between the Ministry of Technology, industry and with the support of the World Bank, it has a primary objective to formulate a national digital economic policy for the year 2030.

I am pleased to convey my sincere appreciation to the Education and Training Chapter of the Federation of Information Technology Industry Sri Lanka (FITIS) for organising this International Education Forum in a timely manner to discuss on the topics the Sri Lankan audience need to hear. I like to commend the effort of FITIS by bringing the policy makers, school children, teachers – both from the private and government sector, and the industry professionals to one space.

Information Technology is a fast-developing industry creating numerous job opportunities across domains to build the national economy. It helps globally and locally. It helps several industries to accelerate work effectively and efficiently. Partnerships need to evolve between the government training institutions and private institutions to build a better future. I see the International Education Forum as a stepping stone for the same.

To unleash the power of digitization, the Ministry of Education is now in the process of introducing ICT related aspects into the school curriculum. This will enable the students to experience the correct and safe use of digital tools and to realise the potential of the digital world in career selection and critical thinking. Importantly, the building of knowledge and skills of human resources needed to sustain digital economic development, must start from the schools to contribute in nurturing a global citizen.

Our students need to learn and hear more than what is being taught in the classrooms and these forums help them in building their wider ICT experience. The forums coupled up with effective career guidance sessions are the key to develop ICT professionals from the student’s pool. FITIS through its Educational Forums and other initiatives should be playing a significant role in developing a highly competent, employable workforce in Sri Lanka in creating the modern Z generation citizen. I wish they conduct regional level Education Forums to help the rural Sri Lanka experience the power of digitization in constructing the modern global citizen.

Let me conclude by wishing all success for the FITIS initiatives and the International Education Forum in every possible way.

I feel pleased and delighted to launch the International Educational Forum, an excellent initiative with a futuristic mindset. I thank the Federation of IT Industry Sri Lanka and especially the Education and Training Chapter and its leadership for this great vision addressing the issues the nation would face in developing the digital Sri Lanka.

It is an accepted fact that in this digital age, the growth of technology is an important factor for boosting the national economy. In building the national economy, Sri Lanka needs additional skill force on the technology domain. We need to work together to make sure that we stay focused on the vision of enhancing technology of the nation. This can not be achieved unless the whole country subscribes to digital technology, which includes our rural community.

I encourage the partner educational institutions of the FITIS Education and Training Chapter to lay the pathway for an integrated approach for a digital future by creating awareness on the power of technology across all domains throughout the country.

As the State Minister of Technology, I wish to convey my best wishes to FITIS, its Chairman, the Education and Training Chapter as the hosts, for a successful and productive International Education Forum.

FITIS Chairman Indika De Zoysa said that the educational institutions should rework on their strategies to develop their technology-based skill force across domains. He encouraged the educational institutions to revamp their courses and curricula to meet the global standards and expectations and guide the next generation to choose their path which would help in boosting the national economy. FITIS Education and Training Chapter has always been a pillar in empowering Sri Lankan ICT education to match global expectations by suitably updating the course models and contents, De Zoysa added.

Mr. Amila Bandara, President of the FITIS Education and Training Chapter called the educational institutions to play a larger role, in increasing its study centres, both in the urban and rural areas, customising its content to create digital literacy, designing courses that integrate diverse domains with Information Technology in innovatively creating new professionals to meet the demand. He added that, the Education and Training Chapter is committed to the national vision of digital transformation and as part of that, the chapter is ready to work with the smaller players too across the nations even in the rural areas by aligning them in getting required accreditations for their programs.

The FITIS International Education Forum will take place at the Lotus Hall, Bandaranaike International Memorial Conference Hall (BMICH) on 3rd November 2023 from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.
