Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi : ce temple est construit autour de l’Arbre de la Bodhi, l’arbre de l’éveil. Pour les bouddhistes, c’est sous cet arbre que Bouddha aurait atteint l’illumination pendant ces temps de méditation.
Une branche de l’arbre sous lequel Bouddha reçut l’illumination à Bodhgaya fut ramenée d’Inde en 236 av. J-C par Sanghamitta Thera (282-203 av. J.-C.), la fille aînée de l’empereur indien Ashoka et fondatrice de l’ordre des nonnes bouddhistes au Sri Lanka. La branche fut plantée ici et donna l’arbre du temple. Gautama Bouddha avait le dos appuyé sur l’arbre sacré lors de son illumination, ce qui fait de cet arbre un lien vivant direct et authentique avec Bouddha.
Il est considéré comme l’un des plus vieux arbres du monde.
Il a été planté sur une haute terrasse à environ 6,5 m au-dessus du sol. Il est entouré de grilles pour le protéger. C’est l’un des objets les plus sacrés des bouddhistes du Sri Lanka et respecté par les bouddhistes du monde entier.
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi: this temple is built around the Bodhi Tree, the tree of awakening. For Buddhists, it is under this tree that Buddha would have reached enlightenment during these times of meditation.
A branch of the tree under which Buddha received enlightenment in Bodhgaya was brought from India in 236 BC. BC by Sanghamitta Thera (282-203 BC), the eldest daughter of the Indian emperor Ashoka and founder of the order of Buddhist nuns in Sri Lanka. The branch was planted here and produced the temple tree. Gautama Buddha had his back resting on the sacred tree during his enlightenment, which makes this tree a direct and authentic living connection with Buddha.
It is considered one of the oldest trees in the world.
It was planted on a high terrace about 6.5 m above the ground. It is surrounded by grilles to protect it. It is one of the most sacred objects of Buddhists in Sri Lanka and respected by Buddhists around the world.
