The Citrus Roti Mania at Citrus Hikkaduwa | Restaurant Review

“THE place to be for all things Hikka roti!”

Heading to Hikkaduwa is always something to be excited about. For us, it wasn’t the picturesque beaches or the surfing this time around, but the hype about the delicious local rotis which are becoming increasingly notorious around here. So, say hello to “Hikka Roti Mania”!

Inspired by the vibrant “roti” culture and the unmatched vibes of Hikkaduwa, Citrus Hikkaduwa has recently introduced an all-new ‘roti wrap’ menu with a scrumptious variety of sweet and savoury rotis — all served with a touch of Citrus’s culinary magic.

They are open every night for dinner so be sure to check it out if you’re ever headed down South!

MAINS

Creamy Prawn Roti — LKR 690 (5/5)

A roti filled with a creamy prawn filling is not something I thought I’d ever get to try. This unique combination of flavours and textures truly elevated the humble roti to new heights. It really was love at first bite. The roti, beautifully golden brown, was delicately folded, revealing glimpses of the soft prawn filling within. And the rich prawn filling was generously portioned with the most succulent prawns. Each bite was a delightful blend of savoury, velvety, and slightly sweet notes, and we couldn’t help but want more, and the only thing stopping us was that we needed space to try out everything else.

Black Pork Curry Roti — LKR 690 (4/5)

Now what’s more Sri Lankan than some black pork curry with hot-hot roti? The combination of the two was familiar, but the fact that it came as a wrap gave the combination a new twist. The black pork curry was flavourful and abundant in spices, so there were hardly any complaints there. If anything, would have loved to see a little more of the black pork curry filling and a little less roti.

Roast Chicken Roti — LKR 480 (2.5/5)

Now the roast chicken roti was a little underwhelming compared to the previous two options we had. The filling itself was delicious, but we hoped there would be more chicken in the filling and on top of that, we didn’t taste the smokiness that we would usually look for when eating roast chicken.

Roast Beef Roti — LKR 680 (3/5)

The roast beef roti consisted of a smooth filling with mushrooms, but we felt that the beef took a little bit of a backseat to the mushroom in the filling —which in my humble opinion, was the hero of the dish. All in all, the roti wrap was filling for sure, but we do wish the beef took more of the spotlight.

DESSERTS

Coconut & Passion Fruit Roti — LKR 450 (5/5)

Of everything we tried, the coconut and passion fruit roti was by far the most unique dish we had during our time at Citrus Hikkaduwa. The roti was oozing the sweet juices of the pani pol and passion fruit, and the combinations of the two flavours — although we were sceptical at first — really took us by surprise in the best way. The sweet and slight nuttiness of the coconut together with the tangy passion fruit blended perfectly well with one another and the roti wrap, gave the whole dish the final wrap-around (literally) of textures. And speaking of textures, biting into the passion seeds encased in the wrap was an added little joy of its own!

Chocolate Ice Cream Roti — LKR 560 (4/5)

Now this one is for those of you who have massive sweet tooths for chocolate. The chocolate ice cream roti came with a generous serving of chocolate sauce that was dripping from left, right and centre — so could there really be anything to complain about? It was a very delightful mess.

AMBIENCE

Located right at the entrance to Citrus Hikkaduwa, Citrus Hikka Roti Mania is a vibe in and of itself. The outdoor dining space in the open courtyard upfront is the perfect place to catch the beautiful Hikka sunsets. The staff was also extremely friendly but since the dining space is a little removed from the rest of the hotel complex, we found it a bit difficult to get in touch with the staff.

All in all, our “Hikka Roti” experience was definitely one-of-a-kind. The Hikka Roti Mania stall at the Citrus Hikkaduwa is without a doubt worth checking out if you’re in the mood for some uniquely delicious roti wraps!
