Sakkarai Pongal | Cooking with Aunty D

Thai Pongal is almost here and it calls for some mouthwatering festive treats! If you feel like celebrating, don’t wait around, make this simply sweet Sakkarai Pongal dish right at home.

Here’s how you make it!

Ingredients:

Jaggery 250 g

Mung Dhal 1/4 cups

Raw Rice 1 cup

Roasted Mung Dhal 1/4 cup

Water 5 cups

Boiled Milk 1 cup

Cardamom 1/2 tsp

Ghee 1 tbsp

Cashews

Plums

Method:

Start by melting jaggery with water in a pan. Once the jaggery dissolves and lightly thickens, turn off the heat and keep it aside.

Next, roast yellow mung dhal for 2 minutes on medium heat and leave aside.

To a pot, add washed raw rice, roasted mung dahl and water, and cover with a lid to let it cook.

Add boiled milk and melted jaggery into the pot and combine well.

Finally, add cardamoms followed by cashew nuts and plums roasted in ghee for some added flavour. Enjoy!
