National Council for Child & Youth Welfare to raise funds through “Music to Heal” event

The National Council for Child & Youth Welfare (NCCYW – Sri Lanka) will be hosting the event “Music to Heal”, a much-needed fundraiser. The music event will include a series of songs in Sinhala, Tamil, and English sung by members belonging to various singing associations along with other dancing acts. The event will be held at the Western Province Aesthetic Hall, Prof. Stanley Wijesundera Mawatha, Colombo 07, on 06 November 2022 at 2.30 pm.

 

Mr. Dayasiri Warnakulasuriya, (President, NCCYW) said, “with the limited funds and the current economic conditions of the county, the NCCYW have not been able to adequately fund existing infrastructure developments or any enhancement of the existing infrastructures. Educational skills and vocational development of the eight Child Development Centre’s housing over 250 children, is a hardship that needs redress. This situation is being further exacerbated by an increasing number of children residing permanently in the Homes. The Homes are thus compelled to maintain a basic program of ‘one for all’ to ensure that minimum levels of educational instruction and living standards are maintained for the wellbeing and development of the child”.

 

He further added, “Mr. Asoka Weerasekera, our Trustee and an active member of the National Council since 2002, suggested raising funds for the National Council as he did before on two successful occasions. The Board of Management of the National Council wholeheartedly agreed to support this fundraising project on behalf of our Child Development Centres throughout the island”.

The Board of Management and the Trustees have decided to give an opportunity for the children living in Moratuwa, Madiwela, Pamunugama, and Dummaladeniya Homes to grace the occasion and sing.

 

The NCCYW was established in 1954 by the late Sir Albert Peiris, Lady Evelyn De Soyza, Dr. L.O. Abeyratne, Dr. Mary Ratnam, and Mrs. Sita Seneviratne. Thereafter incorporated in 1960 as a Government Approved Charitable Organization, the NCCYW became administered by a Central Board and a set of Trustees. The NCCYW has eight Child Development Centres (CDC’s) providing shelter, care, education, sanitation, health, and training for over 300+ children and youth deprived of the very basic amenities in life. They are mostly admitted to our CDCs by the Department of Social Services, Probation & Child Care Services, and some through Judicial Courts. These children are unfortunately poor, destitute, abandoned and some are mentally impaired. The CDCs are managed by a team of experienced and dedicated staff & matrons under the guidance of the NCCYW’s Central Board & Trustees (www.nccyw.org).

The NCCYW Mission

The NCCYW is a nonprofit organization, whose primary focus is to unlock the potential of at-risk children and youths by providing compassionate and effective services that create opportunities for success.

Further to uplift the living conditions of the abused, destitute, and mentally impaired children in the Homes by providing shelter, care, education, and training for about 261 children who are sent by the Department of Probation and Social Service, as a result of shattered family background, either abandoned, mentally retarded or abused, which renders it difficult for them to merge and co-exist in society.  It is necessary to carry out the appropriate repairs and reconstruction on buildings and upgrade infrastructure facilities and computer literacy in the long term, by providing equipment such as computers, printers, and training facilities.

 

The Board is considering an action plan for the youth in the Homes who are legally compelled to leave the Homes at the age of 18, as there is currently no system in place to assist these youth to move to an independent life outside the Home. It is the intention of the present Board to improve the organization’s profile as a growing concern by encouraging increased donor participation, especially from the corporate world.
