“Pocket-friendly Thai food for the whole family!”
With so many Thai restaurants around Colombo, what makes this quaint little family-owned restaurant so special? That answer is simple, Mount Thai delivers homemade Thai food with a local touch. Their dishes have a distinct flavour profile that combines the best of both Thai and Sri Lankan culinary traditions, creating an indescribable taste that’s truly unique. Even their special chilli paste, lovingly crafted by their chef, adds that extra “je ne sais quoi” to their signature dishes. And let’s not forget about their wallet-friendly prices, generous portions, and exceptional flavours. Got your attention?
Let’s dig in!
APPETISERS
Tom Yum Seafood Soup with Coconut Cream — LKR 1,200 (5/5)
My first thought was, hey, it’s like drinking a delicious red curry! Only it’s soup (insert drooling emoji here). Spicy, warm and delicious. This tom yum soup boasts a homemade chilli paste base and a lavish array of seafood, featuring fish, prawns, and cuttlefish, all harmoniously mingling with a helping of vegetables like cabbage and spring onions. You can taste the coconut and the chilli, which gives it that extra smooth kick. The long coriander leaves mixed in also add some zest to the flavour. True to its word, it clears up your airway.
MAINS
Prawn Holy Basil — LKR 1,750 (5/5)
Watch out for this one, cause it may not seem like it, but these little prawns are hiding a spicy secret. From the first bite, you can taste the saltiness with that green chilli spiciness, but give it a second and you will be hit with a kick from that chilli! The basil shines as the hero of this dish with its aromatic flavours and a hint of garlic.
Deep Fried Whole Fish With Red Chili Sauce (650 g) — LKR 3,600 (5/5)
I’m someone who will always choose chicken over fish, but in this case… more, please! Served on a bed of juicy and thick sauce made using Thai spices, this fried fish tasted like it was dipped in a red curry. Only this red curry was much sweeter and was made with dry chillies, lime leaves, galangal and lemongrass. The fish was soft and you could taste the red chilli sauce and the spices in the meat. The skin was crispy and covered in a sauce that you definitely do not want to leave behind.
Watakolu Egg — LKR 1,000 (3/5)
After eating a bunch of spicy food, this comforting dish was the perfect way to cool down. Made with watakolu (gourd), egg and garlic, this take on the Thai dish is soft, creamy and mild. The team at Mount Thai did stray away from the traditional dish, that is adding eggs to it as some Asian recipes like to try. I tried this dish with Mount Thai’s homemade Nampla Sauce.
Nampla, a traditional Thai sauce, gets a unique Mount Thai touch with the inclusion of fish sauce, kochchi, and zesty lime juice. This concoction doubles as an excellent dip to elevate the flavour of any savoury dish, making it a must-try for those seeking an extra burst of taste.
Thai Traditional Fried Rice Chicken — LKR 1,600 (4/5)
Mount Thai’s special take on Thai fried rice is fragrant, flavorful, made with jasmine rice rather than basmati, and packed with chicken. This dish comes with a generous helping of chicken, along with cabbage and celery in the rice. Both dark and light soy sauce is mixed in the rice, so you can get a Nasi Goreng-type flavour. You can even taste the soya sauce in the chicken. This makes for a very filling meal all on its own.
DESSERT
Lychee With Ice Cream — LKR 700 (5/5)
A sweet and delectable bowl of fresh lychees, topped with vanilla ice cream! As simple as it sounds, this was a fitting conclusion considering lychee is one of the most popular fruits in Thailand often enjoyed as a dessert topping.
DRINKS
Lime and Seven Up — LKR 550 (3/5)
You can choose to have your lime juice on the sour side or douse it in sugar. Either way, the combination of lime juice and Seven Up makes for a refreshing and cool beverage that is ideal to sip on while grubbing on spicy Thai food.
AMBIENCE
Mount Thai exudes a cosy atmosphere that wraps you in comfort. The inviting ambience will provide customers with a relaxed experience throughout their meal. It did for us! The wooden chairs and tables inside and in the courtyard outdoors give off a cafe-esque vibe. The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive to us and to everyone who walked through the door.
However, the highlight of this restaurant is the fact that they serve budget-friendly dishes with great quality in both food and service. They have already built up a loyal customer base, particularly among Thomians who frequent the restaurant for after-school specials.
What keeps bringing them back? Is it wallet-friendly prices? Great food? Or is it the fact that this restaurant gives you a homey feeling from the moment you walk in? With their special fusion of Sri Lankan traditional taste and signature Thai dishes, Mount Thai has carved out their own corner in the Thai restaurant scene in Sri Lanka, and they are proving that they deserve it.
