LAGO Italian Bistro | Restaurant Review

Discover the Italian in you, at Lago Italian Bistro!

Well, you heard it correctly! Lagos Italian Bistro is a must-try for anyone who loves good Italian cuisine. Located amidst the hustle and bustle of Colombo City Centre, Lago takes you on a culinary exploration of Italy, but with a tropical twist that makes it more intriguing. With the incorporation of fresh ingredients and simple preparation techniques, this place would make you want to come back again. We took the time to sit down with them and review some of their unique and signature dishes, and can we just say that the whole experience was simply exquisite!

Starters

Calamari Alla Griglia (LKR 1,100)

We were fortunate enough to see how the grilled calamari was prepared, and oh boy, it was just amazing! They prepared their own spicy balsamic BBQ sauce, which had a very tangy, sweet and sour flavour that perfectly complemented the grilled calamari. The calamari was fresh, chewy and full of flavour, and it led us to a very promising start. It also prepared us for what was coming up next.

Mains

Funghetto (LKR 1,450)

Whether you are vegetarian or not, this is definitely a must-try dish! Offering the best to their customers, they prepare their burger buns every day. And the pulled mushrooms, scamorza cheese and onion chutney are combined and smoked to mimic the taste of a meat patty. Along with the burger, they also provide a salad drizzled with their homemade dressing, the crispiest fries and their homemade mayonnaise sauce. Simply put, it was top notch!

Ravioli Ricotta E Spinaci (LKR 1,500)

Would you be surprised at this point that even the pasta is handmade? With each bite, we got an earthy flavour, and combined with the cheese, it was Magnifique! Being an Italian geek myself, this has got to be my favourite dish. The Ravioli itself was so soft and bursting with flavour. Each ravioli was handmade and cooked in butter and sage sauce, to add that extra flavour. A small amount of drizzled olive oil added the finishing touch, as it perfectly complemented the dish.

Buffalo  (LKR 1,850)

Their Pizza Napoletana range has got to be among their signature dishes. Their ingredients are directly imported from Italy. Their Napoletana dough is left 48 hours before to ferment, to ensure that the dough has that extra puffiness on the serving date. The place also consists of an open pizza oven, allowing the customers to see what they are going to consume. Speaking about the pizza, the crust was thin and light, and the dough had a smoky flavour that went perfectly with the buffalo mozzarella. The buffalo cheese was just perfecto and it paired so well with the Italian sauce.

Desserts

Crostata (LKR 750)

Their Italian shortcrust along with the strawberry jam and the ice cream is made by them. You can taste the freshness of the strawberry jam with each bite. The sourness of the jam gets balanced with the vanilla ice cream. I couldn’t have thought of another dish to end the night – I was on cloud 9 for sure!

Drinks – Mocktails

Vaccine Jar (LKR 650)

Personally, I was excited to try out this drink because of its unique name and the incorporated ingredients. As the name suggests, this drink is made with ingredients that can help you boost your immune system. The drink included spinach, ginger, turmeric, lime and honey, all of which contain natural antioxidants. But don’t be fooled, as much as the drink is healthy, it is also refreshing. The aroma as well as the initial flavour of the drink was very earthy, and then kicked in the flavour of spinach, which was also not too strong – a well-balanced, not too sweet and not too sour, drink.

Floral Passion (LKR 650)

As the colour reveals, this drink is perfect for a sunny day. As soon as we took the first sip, we got hit with the combined flavour of passion fruit and hibiscus. The karapincha taste followed giving the drink a cooling effect. The addition of the passion fruit seeds made the drink healthier as well.

Ambience

From the moment we entered the restaurant, we felt like we’d entered an idyllic oasis. From the furniture to the architecture, this environment takes your troubles away and helps you to relax and take in the city view. The staff was very friendly and helpful, and their service was excellent! If you’re looking for a place to celebrate any occasion with your friends and family, or you’re just simply trying to treat yourself, be sure to check out this place!

Tip – Do try the Ravioli Ricotta E Spinaci, and thank us later, because you simply can’t go wrong with it!
