Joy’s Cafe | Restaurant Review

“A bite-sized addition to Ward Place”

Joy’s is the all-new addition to MOSH Salon in Ward Place that serves up a variety of hors d’oeuvres and if you’re looking for something more substantial, they’ve got you covered with their range of burgers, paninis, and an array of delectable desserts. The home business, owned by Reshani Ratnayake, uses homemade spices and out-of-the-box recipes to add a unique flair to each dish.

Here’s what we tried!

APPETISERS

Chicken Pizza — LKR 250 (3/5)

Adorned with cheese, this pizza has a generous helping of black olives and tender tandoori chicken, and more importantly, more toppings than crust. You get a slight sweetness from the olives but also a hint of heat from the spices. Best to eat while it’s warm in order to enjoy a nice cheese pull.

Fish Patty — LKR 150 (3/5)

This classic Sri Lankan snack came with a perfectly buttery crust and a slightly spicy, savoury flavour. The filling was made with mackerel and potatoes. I felt it could have used a bit more spice or salt but other than that, it makes for an ideal mini-sized comfort food.

Fish Roll — LKR 170 (3/5)

It’s filling was made with somewhat similar ingredients to the fish patty, but it had a milder fish flavour, so that upon first bite, it would give the impression that you were eating…. chicken? The centre of the fish was flavourful from the spices, and the outside was softly breaded.

Chicken Samosa — LKR 120 (4/5)

The crispness of the samosa pastry is what immediately catches your attention. Along with a variety of different vegetables, this tasty mixture of minced chicken and potato, flavoured with their own herbs and spices, makes this crowd-favourite a definite go-to when grabbing some snacks to go.

MAINS

Chicken Burger — LKR 2,000 (Full Burger) (5/5)

Made using minced chicken, with the addition of mustard and pickle sauce, Joy’s signature chicken burger had a nice kick to it and left us with a peppery aftertaste. It undoubtedly left me wanting more. (Disclaimer: Pictured here is a sample size)

DESSERT

Danish — LKR 350 (5/5)

Joy’s makes a delicious and sweet, homemade danish that you would otherwise think was something that was bought at a hotel cafe. The pastry itself was flaky and crumbly, and the centre was packed with real blueberries. A perfect treat to have with your evening tea or to have at breakfast.

Cinnamon Roll — LKR 300 (4/5)

The icing itself was sweet and had a strong cinnamon flavour. The dough was airy and lightly sweetened. This made for a nice simple dessert. Not too sweet, so anyone can enjoy it. These rolls were light and fluffy with a thin coating of glaze on top.

Ganache Brownie — LKR 650 (5/5)

Note to self; if you’re taking this brownie home, it’s best to warm it up a bit and eat it, because that is what really makes it so completely gooey from the moment the fork breaks it apart to the moment you taste it. This divine dessert was absolutely scrumptious, and made using imported Cadbury chocolate. Savour every bite, because when it’s over, you will want more.

DRINKS

Watermelon Juice — LKR 600 (5/5)

This watermelon juice was sweet and refined, and had the perfect consistency. It contained mint leaves which gave it an extra zesty taste.

AMBIENCE

At first glance, Joy’s is a combination of a food stall and a cafe. The space has a compact outlet to order your food, and a wide outdoor area for customers to sit and enjoy the chill vibes of the cafe away from the noise of Ward Place. And best of all, the food is affordable and delicious!

Feeling peckish? Pop in for a snack, a nice warm meal, a coffee or a cup of hot chocolate at Joy’s Cafe!
