We tried the Wok Family Meal with Chicken (for 4 pax) priced at LKR 17, 888 from their menu, here’s what we thought!

STARTERS

Deep-Fried Vegetable Spring Rolls

These crispy and golden brown spring rolls had a generous amount of delicious filling. It came with a sweet chilli sauce, a staple that adds a tinge of sweetness to balance out the salty flavours of the vegetables. It’s best eaten on arrival to enjoy its hot and crunchy texture — also to avoid others getting their hands on them first!

Deep-Fried Golden Prawns Triangles with Sesame Seeds

The bread was generously smeared with prawn paste and coated with sesame seeds. What I usually love about prawn toast is the sweet and nutty combination of flavours coming from the prawns and sesame seeds and these golden prawn triangles knew exactly what I meant. But unfortunately, it was a little too oily for our taste. Other than that, it was a nice snack to munch on.

MAINS

Wok Fried Aromatics Seafood Rice

When you order seafood rice, you expect one thing, a load of seafood! This fried rice came loaded with prawns and cuttlefish so… check! The rice was fragrant and cooked nicely. It had also been tossed with corn for some added texture. I felt that the rice was under-seasoned, but there’s nothing some good chilli paste can’t fix. And their in-house chilli paste did the trick!

Vegetables Wok Fried Noodles with Egg and Superior Soy Sauce

The noodles were thick, chewy and savoury with a tinge of sweetness. This came with a side of Hilton’s ‘superior soy sauce’ which, by their recommendation, is meant to be used as a dip for the noodles. And I couldn’t agree more. The saltiness of the soy sauce balanced out the sweetness of these noodles and enhanced its flavours to its fullest. The carrots, bean sprouts and spring onions added a fresh touch to the entire dish. Portion wise, I would indeed say this is shareable between four.

Kung Pao Chicken with Dried Chilli & Cashew Nut

Battered and deep fried chicken stir-fried with cashews and dried chilli — yum. With the sweet and creamy flavour of the cashews and a good amount of heat coming from the chilli, this chicken could not have been any better! There was a hefty portion of chicken in the dish. It paired amazingly with the wok fried seafood rice as well as the noodles. Make sure you get a bit of everything for the perfect bite!

Stir Fried Prawn with Savoury Black Pepper Style

These juicy jumbo prawns, coated in a light batter and deep-fried to golden perfection, were definitely the star of the show for me. The prawns were juicy and perfectly cooked.  The black pepper sauce added a tinge of spice, but it was mostly sweet. The prawns were huge so the portion was more than enough for 4 people.  Definitely a must-try!

Assorted Mixed Chinese Vegetables

Very similar to the vegetable chop suey that we all love, the assorted mixed Chinese vegetables contained carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, bok choy and three types of mushrooms — oyster, button and shiitake. There was a decent amount of mushrooms in the dish, and I love my mushrooms so that was a highlight for me. While the chop sueys we usually have are on the sweet side, this vegetable assortment had an overall salty taste. But it was under-seasoned and not very interesting to eat.

DESSERT

Sago Pudding with Yellow Mango Puree

After devouring all the salty and savoury dishes, I was looking forward to this Asian delight. But it did not hit the spot for me. The pudding was a bit watery and the mango flavour was very subtle. It was not sweet enough for me as well. But if you are not into overly sweet desserts, I’m sure this sago pudding will be a nice treat. The portion size was well enough for 4 people to enjoy.

Conclusion

Overall, though this spread might be on the higher end of the spectrum in terms of price, you can expect a filling meal fit for four, all the way from appetisers to dessert.
