Smokin’ Sensations: A Sizzling BBQ Adventure!
Nestled discreetly in a corner along Kirula Road, adjacent to the Cutting Station, BBQ Station is a cosy restaurant, helmed by the talented Johann Peiris. With its inviting ambience and friendly staff, they create a delightful dining experience that is sure to leave a lasting impression.
It is also a haven for barbeque enthusiasts, offering a selection of grilled cuisine paired with an enticing array of sides, desserts, and beverages. The star of the show is their expertly crafted barbeque dishes, where smoky flavours and perfectly charred meats take centre stage.
Starters
Calamari — LKR 2,250 (4/5)
This dish was grilled wonderfully, resulting in a tender calamari that didn’t have that dreaded rubbery texture. The special marinade concocted by the chefs themselves added a wonderful touch, giving it just the right amount of flavour. The portion size was fair as well — easily shareable among two people.
Mains
Platter for Two — LKR 8,500 (4.5/5)
Moving on to the main courses, the Platter for Two was one of the highlights on the menu and a win for meat and fish enthusiasts. Picture this: juicy chicken sausages, mouthwatering pork ribs, flavourful chicken and barramundi fish grilled to perfection. For me, the fish paired with their homemade tartar sauce, was a match made in heaven. The chicken, pork and sausages were beautifully char-grilled and served with their signature BBQ sauce on the side. All the meat retained a beautiful smoky and juicy taste through and through, though perhaps the pork ribs could’ve used a little bit more glaze for flavour.
Note: comes with two sides of garlic bread, green salad and two choices of either potato salad or jacket potato.
Beef Sirloin — LKR 6,250 (4/5)
Enter the Beef Sirloin, marinated and grilled to a medium-rare. However, you can get yours as well done or rare as you like on request. It’s the perfect choice for all the steak lovers out there. The beef, accompanied by a dash of their in-house pepper sauce, was a hearty, filling dish that left us completely satisfied.
Note: comes with a side of garlic bread, green salad and a choice of either potato salad or jacket potato.
Sides
Let’s talk about the sides because they deserve some serious recognition. These are all available for each main that is ordered. The garlic bread was a game-changer, combining the goodness of roast paan with a delectable garlic paste. We may have ascended to carb heaven. There was also the green salad with its zesty in-house Italian dressing, enough to fill in any gaps leftover by the mains. Plus, you have the option of getting a potato salad or a jacket potato — both equally tasty. These sides truly rounded up the meal perfectly, and we were impressed with each and every one of them.
Desserts
Passion Fruit Pavlova — LKR 600 (4.5/5)
The passion fruit pavlova is a great choice not only for passion fruit lovers but for those who are craving a light dessert. With its creamy whipped cream and tangy passion fruit, nestled in a delicate meringue shell, it’s a burst of tropical flavours and textures.
Chocolate Nemesis — LKR 600 (5/5)
Next up, a treat for all the chocolate lovers like myself out there. Somewhere in between a chocolate mousse and a lava cake, it’s a gooey delicacy that combined the best of both worlds. If the taste is a touch too sweet for someone, it can be a filling desert to be shared among two people. However, if you have a sweet tooth and don’t mind all the chocolate, it’s definitely a one person treat!
Chocolate Biscuit Pudding — LKR 600 (4.5/5)
There are nothing but good things to say about this dessert as well. It was a delightful combination of perfectly balanced, milk-soaked biscuits and a chocolatey mousse. Not overly sweet — it hits the sweet spot just right. And for those looking for an extra kick, you can request a dash of liquor to be added to it.
Beverages
Lime Juice — LKR 450 (4.5/5)
When it comes to beating the heat, lime juice is the first thing that comes to mind with its revitalising blend of ingredients and zesty lime flavour. Sipping on this drink is akin to a cool breeze on a scorching day—a true lifesaver for parched throats. The tangy flavour of the lime juice perfectly balanced out the smoky BBQ flavours, creating a tasty combination!
Virgin Mojito — LKR 575 (4.5/5)
If you’re in the mood for an extra twist on the lime juice, look no further than the virgin mojito. This drink was a real winner, it’s difficult to go wrong with the combo of lime and soda during any time of the day. Each sip was a burst of freshness, as the dash of mint comes together to create a refreshing experience.
Virgin Margarita — LKR 650 (4/5)
Another lemon-y drink on the BBQ Station’s beverage lineup. However, this was offered with blended mint leaves mixed into the drink , which offered a slightly more subtle hint of mintiness to set itself apart. Remember not to let it sit for too long though, because the blended cool mint leaves, while adding a refreshing spin, also have the potential to turn this drink a little bitter.
Ambience
Beyond the delectable cuisine, BBQ Station hosted an inviting ambience and attentive staff. The welcoming nature of the entire team, including the head chef, created a warm atmosphere that enhanced our dining experience. With multiple seating areas, including private dining options, the restaurant caters to various occasions. Whether it be a romantic date or a casual dinner, BBQ Station’s relaxed and well-lit environment sets the stage for an enjoyable dining experience. Additionally, the presence of a bar ensures that guests can unwind with their preferred beverages.
BBQ Station is undoubtedly a must-visit for those seeking a remarkable barbecue experience accompanied by exceptional service in an inviting setting.
