Sri Lankan Variety.

If you enjoy world travel and sampling the railway activities in different countries then you could do a lot worse than visiting Sri Lanka. It is a gem in world railways.
Currently it is not electrified and here in this picture are a sample of 3 different locomotives from around the world. On the left is one of the big M10A locomotives number 942. This Co-Co 2300hp loco is powered by a big Alco 251 series 12 engine and is the same as the WDM3 engines found in India. This one was built at the Banaras works in Varanasi , India in 2013. They make an incredible noise.
In the middle is a W1 number 715, she is one of only two surviving locomotives of this class. She is a diesel hydraulic built by Henschel of Germany in 1968. She has a British built Paxman engine model 12YJXL V 12 4 stroke.
On the right is a Class M7 this locomotive was built by Brush Traction in England in 1981, a total of 16 were supplied to Sri Lankan Railways with only one being withdrawn so far which is number 803. They are powered by a GM 8-645 V8 2 stroke chucking out 994hp.
Apart from the variety of locomotives there is also a large variety of liveries which contribute to the vibrancy of this country and makes photography an absolute delight.
If you like a challenge then this is the place for you, if you can cope with the high temperatures , the humidity and the mosquitoes then its worth a visit.
The country also has many semaphore signals which are subject to a replacement programme. Many of the semaphores i photographed last year have already gone.
