A View of the Town

David Blacker posted a photo:

Gas Works Junction, through the beautiful windows of Colombo’s Old Town Hall, built in 1873. The windows line an enclosed balcony atrium at the front of the building, overlooking what would have been the main town square at the time it was built. The framed glass is actually a shutter which can be lowered into recesses in the window sill when fresh air is required. A heavier set of weatherproof wooden shutters can be raised to completely shut out light. Designed by British architect JG Smithers, the Old Town Hall served as Colombo’s municipal seat until 1925, when a new Town Hall was built in Cinnamon Gardens.
