Puranawella Fishery Harbour is one of the Major harbours in Southern Province. It is also located in historical place of Sri Lanka called “Devinuwara Upulwan Dewalaya”. Earlier this place was used as an anchorage, by the fishermen who live at Puranawella and adjoining areas. To provide Shore Facilities for the fishermen, start construction work was done by the C.D.E. (Pvt.) Company in 1983.

Approximately 50% of the basin area cannot be utilized due to the presence of a coral layer of coral and hard rock at a depth varying from 1 m to 2 m from MSL.

It is planned to construct a Fish Auction Building, as soon as possible under ADB funds.
