Refuge from the Pyre #7

David Blacker posted a photo:

A father and daughter pray at the grave of their wife and mother. Oddamavadi, February 2024. They have travelled across the country, from their home in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo, having left at dawn in order to get here in daylight. It is the teenager’s first visit to the grave of her mother, lost during the COVID-19 pandemic. She lies alongside 3,633 other victims, mostly Muslims, allowed to be buried in this remote cemetery after Sri Lankan health authorities finally ended, in 2021, a policy forcibly cremating all COVID dead, unheedful of religious and cultural practices, as well as World Health Organisation recommendations. Shot for the soon-to-be-published ‘Oddamavadi: the Untold Story’.
