A Fine Dining Experience Like No Other

Table by Taru is undoubtedly one of the best fine dining restaurants in Colombo, dishing up some of the most tantalising culinary masterpieces that you could ever find in Sri Lanka. We at Pulse had the pleasure of dining with them and reviewing some of their iconic dishes and to say that we loved the experience would be an understatement.

Drinks

Colombo Mule (LKR 1250)

This was a very interesting drink, to say the least, and we had our doubts before trying it because it included curry leaves, better known as karapincha. We couldn’t imagine how curry leaves could be incorporated into a cocktail, but this drink stole our hearts from the very first sip. The drink was very refreshing, limey, fizzy and the taste of the curry leaves blended well with the overall taste of the drink. They say that a cocktail done right is if you can’t taste the alcohol, and we couldn’t taste the strong vodka punch at all. The Colombo Mule was not too sweet, and it was a pleasantly surprising drink to sip away all night long. 10/10 would recommend!

Strawberry Mint Homemade Soda (LKR 750)

If this drink was an emoji, it would be the dancer girl in the red dress. The drink was tangy, and you could clearly tell that it was made from fresh strawberries. The authentic strawberry flavour was the hero and the mint just elevated the overall flavour of the drink. This homemade soda was also not too sweet and it had just the right amount of tang to liven up your day or night. I loved every part of this drink!

Elderflower Homemade Soda (LKR 750)

This was another interesting drink, one that I’ve never tried before. It felt like I was drinking a flower garden, but in the best way possible. And interestingly, this drink brought upon a sense of nostalgia, as it reminded me of some of the iced pops we used to have back in school. The flavour incorporated a jasmine kick and the fizz was punchy and refreshing. Another amazing drink waiting to be tried out by you!

Starters

Before the starter was served, we were surprised by a passionfruit sorbet that is usually served before the meals. And my, oh my, this was an absolute treat. It was tangy and not too sweet, and it incorporated a a strong ginger kick that completely elevated this little pre-dish to the next level. It literally melted in my mouth and was the perfect dish to set my pallette for the meals.

Norwegian Salmon Tartare, Mango, Cucumber, Chilli, Pomelo, Wonton (LKR 1550)

As someone who appreciates fresh salmon, this dish was delicate, soft and fresh. The dish was not too heavy, making it the perfect entrée. The flavours of this dish were very well balanced and the cracker that was sitting on top of the tartare added a crunch to the dish, elevating the depth of the dish. A must try, indeed!

Mains

Beetroot Ravioli with Ricotta, Parmesan, Cashew Burnt Butter (LKR 1650)

Listen to me, if you want to taste heaven, this is the dish to go with. It was cheesy, it was sweet, it was everything heaven is supposed to taste like. The sweetness of the beetroot and the burnt butter just blended so well with the cheese, each bite felt like there was a party in my mouth. And what I absolutely loved about this dish was that it was served with a fresh vegetabe salad, which helped cut through the sweetness and neutralize the flavours so well. I have nothing more to say about this dish other than, you HAVE to try it out!

Chicken Schnitzel, Anchovy Fried Potatoes, Gremolata (LKR 1650)

If you’re a fan of fried chicken, this dish will be your holy grail. Crispy on the outside, fresh on the inside, this dish was perfect in many ways. The tangy, buttery garnish added much appreciated definition to the dish and the hearty salad and fried potatoes were a treat on the eyes, as well as the taste buds.

Desserts

Apple Berry Crumble, Warm Crème Anglaise (LKR 1250)

This dish honestly felt like a warm, comforting hug from a loved one on a stressful day. It was warm, the crumble was crispy and crumbly and it just melted in my mouth. The crumple and the crème anglaise coupled together was a match made in heaven. The crème anglaise was soft, airy and light, and it was a dish that would make you keep coming back for more.

Ambience

Quaint and modern, this restaurant is the perfect spot to celebrate a special occasion, have a romantic date night with your significant other or have an intimate family dinner. The terrace area that we were seated at was breezy, overlooking a view of fairy lights wrapped up around a tree, glistening in the night. The staff were friendly, efficient and very helpful; we were extremely pleased with their excellent service. If you’re in the mood to celebrate a loved one or have a cherished dinner with people closest to you, don’t think twice, make a reservation at Table by Taru.

Tip: Go for the Beetroot Ravioli. You’re not gonna regret it!
